PM sees year of confidence creation

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Saturday that she wants 2013 to be a year of creating confidence in Thailand.

Speaking on the "Yingluck Government Meets the People" weekly programme on NBT, Ms Yingluck said overall economic indicators showed that the economy was growing at a healthy rate.

Domestic consumption and purchasing power were increasing, and more spending had helped spur economic growth, she added.

Sounds good, a pep talk? Why is that? Because so many of us lack confidence, and Why? Could it be the looming political crisis when Taksin comes home, pushing ahead with a controversial amnesty bill, insisting on re-writing a charter which the majority feel isn't an urgent matter. Huge losses and debt incurred when the rice price gamble doesn't work out? Increasing concern over a mini financial crash when all the speculators pull their money out of baht. UDD get tetchy about their demands. It's a powder keg. I feel sorry for this women, sweet as she might be, she's naive, and isn't even in control.

I think it is rather a continuation of "confidence destruction" as a result of the on-going total economic illiteracy on the part of PM YS and her PTP Govt. Let ask many business owners who were forced to close their businesses and thousands of unemployed workers who were let go as a result of the recent wage hike, how confident are they in 2013?

"Confidence creation" sounds like a good thing. It is in fact, a very dangerous thing in many cases.

The peoples of Spain, Ireland and Greece had a tremendous amount of "confidence" in their economies in 2007. And then what happened?

The question is: How is confidence being achieved? Are exports soaring? No? Then confidence should be low. After all, Thailand is an 80% export economy. Global consumption is collapsing. This is hardly an environment that Thailand should be feeling "confident" about. But the dangerous mix of credit expansion and a high baht are making people "feel" rich.

    Mathematically, this cannot l
