On this Makha Bucha Day, vipassana instructor Master S.N. Goenka discusses his fortunate introduction to the meditation practice and how he is passing Buddha's teachings on to benefit people around the world

The majestic Shwedagon Pagoda glowed against the waking navy-blue sky. Every day before the crack of dawn, the platform in front of Myanmar's iconic pagoda is crowded with throngs of devotees _ lay and holy, children and elderly. Some sit meditating, still and silent; others chant prayers. Some do walking meditation around the golden edifice. The air is crisp, the ambience filled with peace and joy.

From dawn to dusk, people come to pay homage to Buddha's hair relics enshrined at the pagoda and dedicate their practice to the Great Teacher.

Today, another respected teacher leads his friends and followers there for a session of mindfulness and piety.
