  • Hands-on Italian cooking classes

18 Jun 2013 : If you're really passionate about Italian cuisine and would like to get some hands-on experience of preparing dishes yourself, Dusit Thani College has some good news. It is organising a series of two-day "Best of Italian" courses in Bangkok, starting next month.

  • If it's not hainanese it's not really 'Khao Man Gai'

16 Jun 2013 : Few people will refuse a plate of khao man gai (chicken with rice), at least as long as a crucial condition is met _ it must be the authentic Hainanese versions of the dish. The true aficionado of this dish will probably walk away from the khao man gai sold in food courts or from roadside stalls, where it is usually prepared by vendors from Isan rather than by Hainanese chefs. Also to be avoided are the places that sell khao man gai together with rice topped with Chinese red pork or grilled duck. The cooks there are unlikely to be experts at preparing real khao man gai.

    It's a mall world

14 Jun 2013 : Deigning restaurants in shopping malls as unworthy of a professional food writer's scrutiny is a poor, indeed pretentious judgement. It's been proven over and over that location does not affect the quality of a restaurant.

    Guru's guide to street food

14 Jun 2013 : CentralWorld is buzzing with more people than usual at the moment because a fair dedicated to street food is being held there until Sunday (see Food, p20), attempting to cement Thailand as the hub of street food. The fact is we can celebrate street food all year round given the sheer number of food vendors in this city. However, for first-time visitors (or even some Bangkok khun noos) the street food scene may feel like unexplored territory. We are here to help with our very own guide to Bangkok street food.

  • Sushi SenSei

14 Jun 2013 : While fans of your standard Japanese buffet are used to the Thai-ified concept of sushi - thin pieces of raw fish that barely cover a rice ball to be dunked into soy sauce so pungent because a big dollop of wasabi has been mixed in it - true sushi enthusiasts know that savouring a piece of sushi is a more delicate affair than that.

    Root of all goodness

11 Jun 2013 : At first sight, it's tubular in shape and similar to a small potato. A closer look reveals the knobby skin of ginger or galangal root. When having a bite, there is a light, sweet flavour to it. On chewing it is slightly crunchy, reminiscent of water chestnuts and yam beans (mun kaew). When cooked it can be not only tasty but healthy as well.

  • 'Old' Pathum thani worth a day trip for taste and tradition

09 Jun 2013 : Suppose you want to get out of town for the day with a plan that includes a meal at an ordinary restaurant, nothing fancy, but with good food at reasonable prices. Also on the list of wants is the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant rural atmosphere, and perhaps a chance to see ancient sites and check out local arts and handicrafts. One destination that checks all of those boxes is Pathum Thani.

    Savours of the South

07 Jun 2013 : Bangkok's Chinatown is so dense with good places to eat that a committed foodie could spend years exploring the neighbourhood. As happens so often in this city of ours, an inverse relationship can exist between the outward appearance of a restaurant and the quality of the food inside.

    Soup for the soul

07 Jun 2013 : Soup may sound like nothing much more than a household gastronomic comfort, or, at gourmet level, a soothing appendix to a meal.

    The definite

07 Jun 2013 : Call us grammar geeks, but it's amazing the difference a single article can make when put in front of a name. We considered calling ourselves "The Guru" for this edition, in sympathy with the restaurant up for consideration here, but decided against. But while The District brazenly insists its own definite article, it has reason to be confident.
