The government plans to launch the bidding for the country's first high-speed train route linking Bangkok with Chiang Mai by this September.

The train will take just three hours to reach its destination.

Director of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning Chula Sukmanop said international contenders are among those expected to participate in the bidding.

"An agreement was signed between China's Vice President Xi Jingping and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday for China to develop the high-speed train project to run from Bangkok to Chiang Mai" (BP 27/12/2011).

So, how open and transparent will the bidding process be, in which 'international contenders' (presumably other than the chinese) are expected to participate?

D1: Loopholes, I would not bet my money on that with oil prices continue to go up and environmental concerns/laws becoming prevalent.
In a couple of years, there will be a completely different economic landscape and I'd put my money in the trains, sure not in the planes.

I never fly to Amsterdam to go home (east, near the German border). It's the hours at the airport, train and car that make it a no.
Flying Frankfurt (very good airport) and connecting HiSpeed just under the airport, brings me closer and faster to my home (all combined 3.5 hours and very comfortable at that.

The LCC will definitely have an edge over fares on the ambitious hi-speed express train service !
China is already facing this situation over its most recently launched Beijing-HK route.
