Light railway to edge expressway plan

The Transport Ministry is considering scrapping a project to build an expressway passing Kasetsart University in Bang Khen district, with a light rail system being planned instead.

Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, who is contesting the Bangkok governor election under the banner of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, said he proposed building a light rail system in the area to Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt.

Mr Chadchat said he agreed with Pol Gen Pongsapat's proposal and told the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTTPP) to study the details of how to make the switch from the expressway plans to light rail.

Yes, we need both rail and expressway. But the gist of this article seems to be a little political. It looks as if Pongsapat has been shared some of the government's vision so that he'll look good for the election.

It's inconceivable that a rail system will be able to replace road system and maintain all original objectives. If the original route is not feasible because of too many communities will suffer then find alternate route. If it's the case of road linkage is no longer needed then change the plan to rail is sensible. It's 20 years ago since the original plan is conceived. Think again. Most important if the people in the area don't want it why spend taxpayer money.

The country needs one complete train system .It doesnt need to be high speed .It needs to be reliable on proper gauge track .It needs to go every where .Bangkok also needs a subway or a train that reaches all p[arts of the city .Not just a line here and and a line there .Everywhere .

They still can't get past the taxi mafia to get a rail system down to Pattaya and Rayong. Another pipe dream by politicians.

wasn't the whole purpose of the expressway was to link the western side with the eastern side seamlessly to help auto traffic flow?
